UFO - Mr. Freeze

Uma das bandas que chegou ao meu conhecimento, também em 2010, o UFO é uma banda inglesa, surgida no final da década de 60, que influenciou grandes nome do Metal como Metallica e Iron Maiden. Um dos integrantes é o monstro Michael Schenker, que já tocou também com o Scorpions, enfim, só ouvindo para se ter uma idéia da genialidade do som dos caras.
Essa canção é de uma fase mais recente da banda, do seu 19º disco, o You Are Here, de 2004.

E fechando, aquela que julgo ser a melhor canção da banda, ainda do segundo disco, o The Trials of Van Occupanther, de 2006, porém numa versão acústica, encontrada no EP Oak & Julian, de 2007.

Midlake - Small Mountain (live)

Após uma longa data sem nada postar, trago a banda que mais me surpreendeu em 2010: Midlake.
Duas canções, uma em cada post, com diferentes versões do que a banda mostrou em studio.
Nessa primeira postagem, Small Mountain, do terceiro disco, o maravilhoso The Courage of Others, de 2010, numa versão ao vivo, tocada em um corredor qualquer de uma das ruas na Austrália.

Scorpions - Born to Touch Your Feelings

Depois de mais uma parada, por motivos pessoais, estou de volta com um vídeo que traz uma das mais belas canções que tive o prazer de ouvir, diga-se de passagem de uma banda cujos hinos sempre respeitei e venerei, mas imperdoavelmente não conhecia esta obra de arte.
Born to Touch Your Feelings desperta uma mistura de setimentos, que variam com o decorrer de sua melodia, alternando tristeza e renascimento, melancolia e explosão. Ela me lembra bastante a famosíssima Nothing Else Mathers, do Metallica (inclusive eu acho que o Metallica a tomou como base), porém eu arrisco dizer que ela encanta bem mais, até porque poucos sabem encaixar sua doce voz, em meio aos solos e riffs estoneantes de Ulrich Roth e Rudolf Schenker, respectivamente, como Klaus Meine.
A canção se encontra no quinto disco do Scorpions, o Taken by Force, de 1977.

The Shins - New Slang

Depois de um bom tempo parado, quase que deixando o blog entregue às traças, resolvi voltar a postar, pois estou entrando no período de férias.
Hoje prestei atenção nessa canção dos Shins, essa maravilhosa banda americana e não pude acreditar que nunca tinha postado-a por aqui. É lindíssima, triste e me lembra algumas coisas muito antigas, referentes ao Velho Oeste, só não sei explicar exatamente o que seja.
Ela está no primeiro álbum de carreira da banda, o Oh, Inverted World, de 2001.

Uma das mais belas canções já feitas até hoje, de uma das bandas mais influentes de todos os tempos.
Pete Townshend abusa de seu belíssimo vocal, que somado ao simples e belo som de seu ukelele, geram essa transformação mágica que encanta a qualquer um que se der ao luxo de ouvi-la até o final.
A música está no disco The Who By Numbers, de 1975.

Depois de uns dias sem postar, voltei.
Ontem eu estava procurando algum vídeo dessa canção e não achei, daí construí meu próprio vídeo, que se não é uma maravilha de produção, pelo menos serviu para que eu postasse a música pra vocês, de quebra acompanhada da letra.

É hoje!
Às 22h, estarei frente a frente com a maior banda norueguesa de todos os tempos.
Como fora prometido, fechando as postagens que passeiam pela discografia da banda, hoje vos trago o último disco até então, lançado oficialmente: Foot of the Mountain, de 2009.
Um álbum recheado de canções fora de série, relembrando os melhores tempos da banda, lá pela década de 80.

A-HA - Analogue

O penúltimo dia de postagens do A-HA, também coincidindo com a véspera de minha viagem pro show, traz o penúltimo disco da banda, até então.
Eu gosto bastante do Analogue, lançado em 2005. É um disco ousado, assim como fora o anterior, porém mais próximo do ponto certo, encontrado justamente no disco posterior, sobre o qual falaremos amanhã.
A canção que abre o dia é a homônima Analogue, que inclusive eles irão tocar amanhã: muito legal.

Os arranjos são bem interessantes (com destaque pro teclado, com som de piano, ao fundo), a batida bem envolvente e ela certamente fica como um dos grandes hits do A-HA, nessa década que se passou.

A-HA - Lifelines

Começando as postagens do dia, mais um disco, o Lifelines, de 2002.
Um disco mais uma vez arriscado, que apresenta certa queda em relação ao anterior, mas um bom disco. O sétimo na carreira da banda.
A primeira canção que posto é a mais bela do álbum, a homônima Lifelines.
O vídeo é dividido em duas partes, uma traz a canção na versão original e a outra é numa versão um pouco diferente.
As imagens são de um filme norueguês, de 1991, de 12 minutos de duração, dirigido por Morten Skallerud: A Year Along the Abandoned Road.

A-HA - Summer Moved On

Fecho o dia com a segunda canção, porém de uma forma brilhante, não apenas pela qualidade dela, que é incontestável, mas pelas condições climáticas encontradas pelo Morten, para interpretá-la, devido o frio intenso da Alemanha, em 2001. É uma aula de falsetes e explosão vocal, capazes de arrepiar tranquilamente qualquer um que esteja habituado a ouvir os mais conceituados vocalistas do Planeta.
Os 20 segundos de "Stay", no refrão, lá pelos 3:30 do vídeo, representam muito bem a perfeição da voz desse cidadão.

A-HA - Velvet

E hoje é dia de entrarmos na segunda fase do A-HA, que após sete anos sem gravar nenhum disco, resolveram lançar esta obra-prima: Minor Earth Major Sky, de 2000.
O disco quebra com toda aquela expectativa de que a banda não mais voltasse ou viesse sem o impacto causado 15 anos antes.
Desconheço uma canção que seja mediana nesse disco, pois adoro todas elas, daí a dificuldade em selecionar duas pra hoje, mas abro as postagens do dia com essa que é disparada a mais bela do álbum.
O clipe é intrigante e fica a critério de cada um interpretá-lo da melhor maneira possível.

A-HA - Move to Memphis

Como segunda postagem do dia, uma canção absolutamente diferente da anterior. Um contrabaixo maravilhoso, bem acima dos demais instrumentos, uma guitarra bem "swingada" e uma batida pra lá de dançante. Não é uma obra-prima, não está entre as melhores deles, longe disso, mas é de se tirar o chapéu esses detalhes, por terem sido bem colocados, segundo a proposta que eles tinham ao gravá-la.

A-HA - Dark is the Night for All

Abrindo o dia com mais um disco, o quarto na carreira da banda: Memorial Beach, de 1993.
É o álbum mais fraco dessa primeira fase (se é que podemos dividir a discografia em duas partes). Confesso que não gostei muito dessa tentativa deles em arriscar, mas tudo bem, o disco tem boas canções e um exemplo disso é essa que trago agora. Bela, como já é de costume, com o Morten esticando a voz nas alturas e os sintetizadores muito bem colocados nos arranjos.

A segunda canção do dia, também desse quarto álbum, é bastante especial pra mim, por ser uma das que mais me recordo daquela época e por ainda ser uma das que mais me tocam, pela suavidade, melodia e por esse contrabaixo belíssimo que segue durante a canção inteira.
Esse vídeo é da turnê pelo América do Sul, em 1998.

A-HA - Crying In The Rain

Hoje é dia de entrarmos no quarto disco da banda e primeiro da década de 90, o sucesso East of the Sun, West of the Moon, de 1990.
Um disco repleto de excelentes canções, que também me deixou confuso na hora de optar por apenas duas, mas como aqui a coisa é bem pessoal, optei pelas duas faixas iniciais, que estão seguramente em meu Top 10 da banda.
Essa canção que abre o dia foi originalmente gravada pelos Everly Brothers, como single, em 1962, numa versão mais simples, bem folk, diferente do que o A-HA fez 20 anos atrás, com sample de som de chuva e demais acréscimos intrumentais.
Sem dúvidas uma música lindíssima.

Como o A-HA mescla muito bem a melodia com a levada dançante, achei interessante trazer na segunda postagem, diferente da primeira, uma canção que tivesse como principal característica essa sonoridade, digna dos melhores setlists de boates dos anos 80, também presente no terceiro disco da banda.

Hoje é dia do terceiro disco, Stay on These Roads, de 1988. Um disco maravilhoso, recheado de clássicos, o que tornou difícil a escolha de apenas dois, mas enfim, eis o primeiro deles, justamente o que leva o nome do disco.
A canção é das mais belas dos anos 80, consequentemente uma das melhore obra da banda.
Destaco, além da melodia, claro, os sons de ventos que aparecem ao fundo: espetáculo.

A-HA - The Weight Of The Wind

Fechando o dia, outra bela canção do disco, se não a mais bela.
Há 20 anos, percebíamos uma voz mais potente do Morten, como podemos observar no áudio original do disco ou em gravações da época, mas hoje nota-se que a voz já não é mais a mesma, mas como gênio que é, ele conseguiu adaptar-se á idade e manter uma interpretação sem tanta extensão no refrão, porém com uma suavidade que dá uma beleza diferente, como vemos nesse vídeo de 2005.

Segundo dia de A-HA, segundo disco da banda sendo lembrado.
Scoundrel Days saiu em 1987 e trouxe uma reunião de clássicos, com menos força do que o primeiro álbum, claro, mas mantendo a originalidade em sua sonoridade.
A primeira canção do dia é belíssima, como era de se esperar e também faz parte de minha infância. Destaco o contrabaixo nela.

Fechando o dia, a canção que traz o título do disco.
Inquestionavelmente uma das mais belas músicas pop já feitas, que foi essencial para marcar a infância e adolescência de muitos que viveram naquela época, como eu.
O clipe é belíssimo, envolvendo três grandes forças da natureza animal, mostrando os diversos meios que um homem utiliza para estar perto da mulher desejada.
Me arrepio sempre que vejo e ouço isso.

A-HA - Take on Me

Hoje inicio uma sequencia de postagens duplas, durante dez dias, que se encerrarão na véspera do show que irei: A-HA, em Recife, no dia 18 de Março.
Vou fazer uma passagem por todos os álbuns da banda, seguindo a cronologia dos mesmos.
Começo com o primeiro disco, o clássico Hunting High and Low, de 1985, que para muitos é o maior sucesso do grupo, pelo menos em termos de vendagem e premiações. A banda nunca havia feito sequer uma turnê ou lançado qualquer outro álbum quando simplesmente entrou para o segundo lugar na Inglaterra e primeiro lugar na Noruega, Áustria e Suécia, vendendo mais de 10 milhões de cópias pelo mundo. No início de 1986, a banda recebeu 11 indicações ao MTV Video Awards, ganhando oito.
Essa canção, que mescla sintetizadores, ritmo dançante e letra envolvente, traz em seu clipe uma bela obra, que condiz com toda a energia que ela passa em seus versos e harmonia. Obrigação no setlist de todo DJ que queira discotecar em qualquer boate do Planeta, mantendo originalidade e satisfação garantida do público.

Descobri essa banda ano passado, garimpando, buscando sonoridades bem folk, melódicas, daí cheguei até essa voz, que se não bate positivamente no primeiro contato, com certeza lhe encanta com o tempo, basta apenas o ouvinte passear pela discografia completa.
A canção é do disco Picaresque, de 2005: pra mim, o melhor de todos.

Pink Floyd - A Pillow of Winds

Com quase um ano de blog, ainda não tinha postado nada deles por aqui, então achei que hoje seria um dia bom pra isso.
Como diz um amigo meu, o PINK FLOYD deveria ser escrito sempre assim, em letras maiúsculas, representando toda a sua grandeza.
Essa canção é belíssima, se encontra no disco Meddle, de 1971, um dos clássicos da banda.
A música é toda do Gilmour e a letra é do Waters. A melodia apaixona e o slide, na guitarra, rasga o coração de quem a ouve.

Eddie Vedder - Masters of War

Ontem não tive tempo de postar nada, então pra compensar essa falta, hoje trago uma postagem que pode valer claramente por duas.
Ninguém menos que Eddie Vedder, interpretando Bob Dylan, acompanhado de Mike McCready no violão.
O concerto aconteceu em 2003, em Seattle.
A canção original se encontra no segundo disco do Dylan, o clássico The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, de 1963.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Eyes of Green, Green, Green

Ontem saindo pra tomar uma cervejinha com amigos, ouvimos essa canção por uma três vezes, dando um sabor especial pra noite, que viria a ser maravilhosa pelos shows que assistimos no Centro Histórico de João Pessoa.
Mas voltando a falar da canção, ela foge um pouco da maioria da proposta melancólica, em termos de sonoridade, da maioria das canções da banda.
Há uma influência evidente da música country, como se percebe na batida e nos violinos constantes, deixando um som gostoso e dançante.
Eles gravaram-na em seu último disco, o Sleep/Holiday, de 2003.

Tim Buckley - Phantasmagoria in Two

O sobrenome deste cidadão não é mera coincidência. Ele é o pai do Jeff Buckley. E ele é mais impressionante do que o filho. E ele também morreu muito jovem.
Sua discografia é bem extensa, daí ainda estou me habituando com a mesma, mas destaco essa canção que, aliás, foi a primeira dele que me apresentaram.
Um folk belíssimo, psicodélico, que não teria essa atmosfera sombria se interpretada por outra pessoa, muito claro isso.
Ela se encontra no segundo álbum do Tim, o Goodbye and Hello, de 1967.
Como podemos perceber, aquele foi um ano indescritível, pela quantidade de geniais obras lançadas.

Hoje trago uma canção que, seguramente, está entre as mais tristes que já ouvi, se não for a pioneira mesmo, nesse quesito.
Não vou me estender em comentários sobre a mesmo, apenas assistam e ouçam!

Cordel do Fogo Encantado - O Palhaço Do Circo Sem Futuro

Ontem fiquei sabendo de uma triste notícia, o fim de uma das melhores bandas do cenário musical contemporâneo de Pernambucano, o Cordel do Fogo Encantado.
A banda surgiu após a abertura de Recife, pro cenário Nacional, graças ao Chico Science e sua Nação Zumbi, e junto com elas, outros estados também passaram a produzir outras bandas interessantes, como a Paraíba, que apresentou a Cabruêra ao Mundo.
Segundo o líder e vocalista do Cordel, Lirinha, a banda chegou numa decisão pacífica, onde cada membro vai seguir seu caminho.
O Cordel deixou três álbuns em sua discografia, dois muito bons e um regular e a canção que trago hoje é a que mais gosto deles, presente no segundo álbum, o homônimo O Palhaço do Circo Sem Futuro, de 2002. Pra mim o melhor dos três.
Mesmo não sendo uma banda que eu ouvisse incessantemente, me alegrou bastante tê-los visto no palco, ao vivo, quatro vezes.
Sem dúvidas uma perda considerável para a nossa música.

Eddie Vedder - Society

Hoje conversava com uma amiga sobre o filme Into the Wild, do Sean Penn, de 2007, que teve como mentor da trilha sonora, o vocalista e líder do Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder.
O filme ainda não vi, mas já me deram excelentes indicações, porém a trilha é maravilhosa. Todas as canções redondinhas, em sua maioria uma fusão de folk com rock, ou às vezes uma dessas vertentes isoladas, mas uma obra realmente muito bem feita, mostrando que o Eddie é realmente diferenciado dentro da banda, seja na composição de letras, nas melodias fáceis de tornarem-se hits, nos arranjos e, claro, na interpretação. Porém no disco, das 11 faixas, duas não foram exclusivamente dele, e uma delas é justamente a que mais me marcou, essa que eu trouxe aqui hoje, originalmente composta por Jerry Hannan. Ela é linda do início ao fim, tem um solo de violão simples e mágico, lá pelo meio, e tem o Vedder inspiradíssimo, naquilo que mais ele sabe fazer, cantar.
Estou ansioso para ver esse filme, pois se tiver pelo menos 70% da qualidade desse disco, já me valerá muito à pena.

Kings of Convenience - I Don't Know What I Can Save You From

Logo que eu soube da notícia do show do A-HA, saí caçando alguns vídeos na internet e me deparei com essa banda, também norueguesa, fazendo uma versão pra clássica Manhattan Skyline e fiquei impressionado com a qualidade dos caras.
Não deu outra, busquei tudo sobre a banda, consegui a discografia (apenas três álbuns) e já me apaixonei por essa canção, que ta no primeiro disco deles, o Quiet Is the New Loud, de 2001.
A banda, que na verdade é uma dupla, se resume a um folk muito bem trabalhado, com uma virtuosidade notável nos violões e um vocal muito bem qualificado. A influência da nossa Bossa Nova se faz presente além, claro, de elementos importantes do folk no passado, como Nick Drake.

Kronos Quartet - Requiem for a Dream Theme

Como semana passada postei o tema de um filme, hoje repito a dose, trazendo uma canção simplesmente fantástica, tema do filme Requiem for a Dream, de 2000, dirigido por Darren Aronofsky.
O filme em si não é lá essas maravilhas todas (eu até gostei), mas esses violinos parecem rasgar a alma de quem os ouve, pela forma suplicante com que eles expressam essa mistura de tristeza e crueldade durante todo o seu crescimento na canção.
A composição é do músico britânico Clint Mansell e a execução e de um quarteto de cordas, Californiano, chamado Kronos Quartet.

Jorge Ben - Por Causa de Você Menina

Sexta fui ao Centro Histórico, aqui em João Pessoa, mais precisamente na Praça Antenor Navarro, curtir o show de uma banda local, chamada Sonora Samba Groove e me deparei com uma versão maravilhosa deles, para esta que eu considero uma das mais belas canções nacionais, da autoria de Jorge Ben.
Esse ano foi bastante especial, pois tive o prazer de vê-lo cantar aqui na minha cidade, num show que deu abertura ao Festival chamado Estação Nordeste. Claro que ele tocou essa canção pra nós e durante alguns minutos foi gostoso senti-la como se estivesse na época de seu lançamento, em 1963, no primeiro disco da carreira do Ben, o espetacular Samba Esquema Novo.

Midlake - Some of Them Were Superstitious

Fica complicado deixar de postá-los por aqui, quando essa é claramente a banda que mais ouço, diariamente, nos últimos meses.
Essa canção é do primeiro disco, o regular Bamnan and Slivercork, de 2004, que se não é uma maravilha, tem canções interessantíssimas como essa, com uma sonoridade pra lá de esquisita, alguns elementos da instrumentação, muito bem trabalhados e melodia impecável.
O vídeo eu não sei do que se trata, mas quem quiser comentar algo sobre ele, me deixará muito grato.

Riz Ortolani - Cannibal Holocaust Theme

Hoje é uma postagem pra lá de inusitada, primeiro porque não se trata de uma banda ou artista de minha admiração, por sua discografia ou coisa do gênero, mas sim da música tema de um filme que ainda não tive coragem de assistir, por diversos motivos, mas que tem me fascinado cada dia mais, pelo que leio e assisto em cada pesquisa que faço, seja em fotos, vídeos ou opiniões de cinéfilos do Mundo inteiro.
Há quem o conteste, há quem o ame, não importa, o importante é que Cannibal Holocaust definitivamente não me sai da mente e sua canção tema, composta por Riz Orlani, é uma trilha sonora minha quase que diária, quando sento aqui de frente pro PC.
Em breve vou assití-lo, até onde conseguir.

Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl?

Outra música que tocou bastante em meu Carnaval foi essa interessantíssima canção da banda australiana Jet. Uma canção perfeita pra dançar com uma garota, pela energia que ela possui em seu conjunto, num ritmo que remete bastante aos primórdios do rock, lá pelos anos sessenta. O vocal é bem característico e sutilmente agressivo, as guitarras contribuem nessa essência instigante e o baixo dá aquela marcação que impede que ousemos ficar parados.

Kings Of Leon - Molly's Chambers

Outra música que ouvimos bastante nesse Carnaval foi essa, de uma banda que estréia aqui no blog, a badaladíssima Kings of Leon, que tem em sua sonoridade aquilo que se rotula como sendo Southern Rock, ou simplesmente um rock alternativo, com influências do country e do blues, e no caso deles, um vocal bem característico, que a princípio não me agradou muito, mas hoje ouço tranquilamente.
A música está no primeiro disco da banda, o Youth and Young Manhood, de 2003 e confesso que ela me lembra bastante algumas coisas que ouvi com o Morphine, mas obviamente sem guitarras.

The Ramones - Surfin' Bird

Hoje começo uma saga das canções que mais ouvi nesse Carnaval, para que vocês possam ter idéia de como foram "tradicionais" esses dias.
Hoje começo com Ramones.
Creio que eu deva ter ouvido essa música umas quinze vezes nesses últimos quatro dias, seja bebendo com amigos, em vários locais diferentes, ou simplesmente guiando o carro.
A canção original é do Trashmen, do álbum homônimo Surfin' Bird, de 1964, e os Ramones a gravaram em seu melhor disco, o Rocket to Russia, de 1977.

Interpol - C'mere

Primeira aparição deles aqui no blog, inclusive bem atrasada, pois tenho uma admiração gigante pelo som desses caras.
A banda é de Nova Iorque e faz parte do cenário indie recente de lá. As influências são antigas, como Joy Division, New Order e Pixies e possui uma proximidade com a sonoridade de bandas recentes, como os Strokes.
Eu particularmente tenho como diferencial positivo, o vocal do Paul Banks e a sonoridade sombria que eles imprimem em suas canções, sem perder a pegada bem dançante.
A canção é do segundo álbum, o Antics, de 2004.

Mais uma vez o Midlake, dessa vez com a terceira faixa do The Trials of Van Occupanther, de 2006.
Ela faz parte das três canções que compõem a genial tríade que abre esse disco. Ainda falta trazer a faixa dois, mas isso fica pra outro dia.

The Middle East - Blood

Hoje, ao garimpar pela internet, descobri mais outra grande banda, o Middle East, da Australia.
É meio complicado rotulá-los, pois em sua essência detectamos uma sonoridade folk, às vezes post-rock, mas indie no geral, se melhor fôssemos classificá-los.
Ainda não cheguei a detectar com que isso se pareça, dentre os grandes nomes do passado, mas sinto uma sutil semelhança com nomes atuais como Midlake e Fleet Foxes.
A banda não chegou a lançar um álbum propriamente dito, mas tem um EP maravilhoso, intitulado The Recordings of the Middle East, gravado e lançado, parcialmente, em 2008, mas remasterizado e lançado novamente em 2009.
Essa canção é sublime e o clipe é paralisante.

Midlake - Roscoe

Já os apresentei pra vocês, creio que saibam que esta é, seguramente, uma das bandas mais espetaculares que já ouvi na vida e que esta é, sem pestanejar, uma das canções mais maravilhosas que já tive o prazer de ouvir.
A postagem de hoje, me é especial demais pela identificação que adquiri com o Midlake, em especial com Roscoe, que abre de forma estonteante a primeira obra-prima da banda, o álbum The Trials of Van Occupanther, de 2006.

Uma mistura de uma bela voz, serena, regida por um violão de caracteríticas idem, ou seja, uma bela obra do bom, velho e tradiconal folk americano.
Jackson C. Frank é um nome a ser lembrado sempre, e a explicação para isso está nessa canção, presente em seu único disco em vida, o maravilhoso Jackson C. Frank, de 1965.

Uma das mais belas canções que já ouvi, interpretada pela mais bela voz masculina que o Mundo já viu. É paralisante essa fusão!
A canção é composta por Bill Giant, Bernie Baum e Florence Kaye e pode ser encontrada na compilação Burning Love and Hits from His Movies, de 1972, ou em sua primeira aparição, na trilha do filme Kissin' Cousins, de 1964, onde Elvis atua ao lado de Yvonne Craig, essa belíssima garota que aparece nesse slideshow.
A direção foi de Gene Nelson.

Hoje é mais um dia de trazer um cover bem interpretado, e lhes garanto que esses é um dos melhores que já vi: The Flaming Lips, executando Seven Nation Army, do White Stripes, presente no melhor álbum deles, o Elephant, de 2003.
O respeito pela originalidade da canção foi mantido, além do acréscimo psicodélico, marca registrada do Flaming Lips.
A espetacular performance do Wayne Coyne é espetacular. Vale à pena conferir!
